MEDICE is a leading German pharmaceutical group headquartered in Iserlohn, with decades of experience in evidence-based treatments. MEDIBIOM® is MEDICE's holistic response to the growing prevalence of gut health conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), bloating, and food intolerances — conditions that affect a significant proportion of the adult population yet are often inadequately addressed by conventional medicine alone.
The MEDIBIOM® program takes a root-cause approach: combining targeted phytonutrient supplements with a structured, six-month dietary protocol, guided by the MEDIBIOM® companion app. Curiosum has been a partner in the ongoing development of the app powered by React Native and Elixir.

Project Overview
MEDIBIOM® is a comprehensive gut health program built on the insight that lasting improvement requires addressing the root causes of gut dysfunction — not just managing complaints. At its core is a two-pillar methodology: a structured dietary protocol spanning six months, and a suite of phytonutrient supplements (Post Ferment, Pre Biom, Pro Bacs, Pre Aloe) designed to restore and maintain microbiome health.
The program guides users through three successive dietary phases — Elimination, Build-Up, and Maintenance — each with specific nutritional rules and food recommendations. The MEDIBIOM® app is the user's daily companion throughout this journey, providing phase-aware food lists, gut-friendly recipes, educational content on gut health, and daily wellness check-ins to record mood and complaints.
The Challenge
The MEDIBIOM® app had to bridge the complexity of a restrictive dietary protocol with the usability expectations of a consumer mobile product. Users needed reliable, phase-specific food guidance alongside rich educational content about gut health — all delivered in a way that felt approachable and supportive rather than clinical.
From a technical standpoint, the challenge was creating a performant React Native app with a flexible, reliable content backend — one where dietary data, phase logic, recipe catalogues, and knowledge articles could be managed and updated by non-technical product teams at MEDICE. Strict compliance with European standards for the processing of medical and health-related data added another layer of responsibility to the engineering work.
The Solution: Digital Companion for a Gut-Health Dietary Protocol
Throughout our involvement in this project, Curiosum have worked as an integrated part of the medigital development team.
We contributed to building and maintaining the Elixir/Phoenix API powering content delivery and user data handling, integrated with Supabase for data management and authentication. Throughout, we worked closely with MEDICE's product and design teams to ensure the app faithfully reflected the clinical protocols of the MEDIBIOM® program.
The core UX flows on the frontend were served efficiently by the implemented backend features: the phase-aware food list with allow/restrict/avoid classification, the recipe catalogue with phase and suitability filters, the phytonutrient product catalogue, the knowledge base with educational articles on gut function, and the daily check-in feature for recording mood and complaints.
The Result
The MEDIBIOM® app gives users a clear, structured, and engaging companion for a six-month gut health journey. Phase-aware food and recipe filtering takes the guesswork out of daily dietary decisions, while daily check-ins for mood and digestive complaints help users record their wellbeing and maintain motivation over the full program duration.
The app has become an integral part of the MEDIBIOM® therapeutic offering, reinforcing MEDICE's commitment to combining pharmaceutical expertise with digital health innovation — and demonstrating how a well-designed mobile product can meaningfully improve outcomes for users managing complex, chronic gut health conditions.
